Head for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at the European Commission (EC), Joint Research Centre
Dr-Ing. Giancarlo Caratti is Head for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at the European Commission (EC), Joint Research Centre and manages the EC Intellectual Property and promotes technology transfer. In 2018, he set up the EC Competence Centre for Technology Transfer which provides support to EU policies and is a reference for national and local polices. In 2015 has was Deputy Commissioner General for the EU participation in the World Expo Milano 2015 and leading the Expo 2015 Task Force.
Previously, Mr Caratti managed other JRC departments, namely: "Institutional/International Relations", "Enlargement" and "Policy Support Strategy". Mr Caratti has started at the European Commission in 1986 within the unit "Renewable Energy". In 1996 he was Advisor for the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in charge of coordination of the work-programme and stakeholder-relations.
Mr Caratti's background is Mechanical Engineering. Before joining the Commission he worked in the Faculties of Engineering of Florence (1982) and Pisa (1984-1985), teaching and researching on Industrial Systems. In 1983 he was Visiting Scholar at Georgia Tech USA. In 1985/6 he was project engineer at Techint, Italy's largest private engineering company. Mr Caratti has over 60 publications in international conferences, journals, etc. and is editor of various technical books. In 2017 he was knighted by the President of the Italian Republic for particular merits.
