A Forward Look for ASTP

As the newly elected President of ASTP, I am very pleased to underline the achievements of my predecessors, carried out in close collaboration with practitioner volunteers and the very professional HQ team. Over the last year, the association has registered over 1000 members, delivered 13 different training courses that trained over 600 professionals. The dynamism of the community is also exemplified by Special Interest Groups, such as the SSHA which has organised several site visits over the year. Finally, ASTP contributed to the visibility and recognition of the profession, at an EU level, through several initiatives, not least the meeting hosted by the Joint Research Council (JRC) in Brussels that gathered representatives of EC and national KTT communities to discuss new measures for Embedding KTOs in Horizon Europe.

Despite this growing activity and dynamism, ASTP has been strongly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result of this, the Board and HQ have instigated closer monitoring of finances and activities to ensure a successful future for the association. I, along with the Board, maintain a positive outlook on the current situation. Firstly, because the association’s financial situation prior to the crisis was healthy and has allowed us time to react to the situation. Secondly, because over the last 18 months the association had been moving toward more digital services and Covid-19 has acted as an accelerator for that strategy. I must say that I am impressed by the incredible job done by all the volunteer committees, trainers, and speakers. Within a few short months, the association had been able to offer a full online timetable including: “Tea with ASTP” regular high-level webinars and online training courses planned in September, then more in November and Masterclasses too.  Although we miss face-to-face networking and sharing, our community is well equipped to pass over this crisis and keep sharing, learning, and promoting KTT.

While reading Tom Hockaday’s recent book, University Technology Transfer, What It Is and How to Do It, I note:
“Technology transfer involves supporting the development of new products and services that address the needs of tomorrow’s society. Technology transfer itself needs to challenge itself and remain fit for purpose.”

The same is true of ASTP. The association is led by KTT professionals to serve the KTT community. We are pleased to invite our members to take part in the strategic thinking process to better shape the future of the association and to better consider current needs and the challenges of tomorrow.
