Critical Friend Review- Membership service exclusively for KTO/TTO Directors

Peer review from your true friend – Develop your organisation in an efficient way

“A good friend listens to your adventures but a best friend makes them with you”.

Are you in need of a helping hand? ASTP offers you a brand new service Critical Friend Review – a service for the members and by the members of ASTP, that provides you with evaluation of your work by people of similar competence to yours – real professionals just like yourself.

Why do I need peer review methods – you might wonder. What do I get from it?

The answer is simple. Peer methods are designed to help you maintain high quality standards, improve your performance, benchmark against practices across the sector, and provide credibility for your work.

Your operations will be reviewed in a 3 step evaluation process:

1. Selected evaluators study materials provided by you
2. Evaluators conduct necessary interviews
3. Evaluators deliver a confidential written report to you.

After the evaluation is complete you will:

  • Understand the strengths and uniqueness of your work, and receive recommendations on how to further maximise impact and effectiveness;
  • Receive input on potential weaknesses, with advice on how to address these;
  • Get suggestions for possible development in order to complement your current services and strengths;
  • Gain insight into alignment of your capacity with your strategies.

Increase knowledge, widen your networks

And why do we provide our members with this service?

Providing true value to you is the most important part of our work, along with increasing understanding, respect, attractiveness and credibility of the technology transfer profession.

Even though there are significant differences in legislation and cultures across European countries, sharing experiences and the best practices between KTO/TTOs are important means towards popularisation of technology transfer.

In this important task you are the one with ideas and fortitude, while we can assist you in the further growth and expansion of your skills and aspiration.

Objective and supportive peer review service by experienced critical friends provides important win-wins for everyone since both the providers and the recipients increase their knowledge and create powerful networks, while the best European TTO practices continue to evolve. This is why ASTP is facilitating continuous learning for individual TTOs.

And why do we provide our members with this service?

Providing true value to you is the most important part of our work, along with increasing understanding, respect, attractiveness and credibility of the technology transfer profession.

How does Critical friend service work?

You contact ASTP headquarters and request the Critical Friend service. Then you will be asked to select two to three evaluators from a list of possible names. After selection you will get together with evaluators. This should be a two day exercise with overnight stay. We recommend a dinner for informal discussions.

The cost of this Critical Friend service ranges from €8.000 to €12.000, depending on the number of experts involved and the scope of the review.

Experience in your service

  • The Board of ASTP will authorise volunteering TTO directors and Senior Technology Managers to provide services under ASTP auspices. Only experienced, RTTP, Technology Transfer Managers with many years experience, from European TTOs are eligible.
  • The objective is to create an opportunity for analysing and improving the quality of the requesting director’s TTOs within his or hers specific geographic, economic and political environment.
  • Based on written material on the TTO and an on-site visit of the experts with interviews of key people, the team of critical friends will provide a written report summarising their observations, impressions, comments, and suggestions for improvements.
  • The Peer review services are conducted under a commitment of non-disclosure by ASTP HQ and the individual Critical Friends.

Testimonial

The Peer Review services provided by ASTP Proton provided very sincere, constructive and ‘actionable’ feedback to my TTO, at the operational level as well as for my Board of Directors. We were looking for “critical friends” to give us advice on how to improve our organization, our operations, and our relationships with our stakeholders – and that is precisely what we got – from a group of people who truly understands and appreciates the fundamental challenges and the inherent dilemmas of technology transfer. We have taken to heart their recommendations, and we intend to invite them back later to assess lasting effects of the Peer Review.”
