This three-day online course provides a broad overview of technology transfer, the inner processes of a KTO, and ecosystem development activities. Experienced KTO managers, will guide you through issues such as reporting, human resources, intellectual property, contract management and compliance. The interactive workshops include case studies and practical examples of KTO operations. The course has been scheduled to give you not only a valuable learning experience but to allow you to optimise networking opportunities with your peers from across Europe.

Who should attend?

Operations within knowledge transfer offices can be diverse in terms of human resources, stakeholder engagement, and the business acumen needed to conduct daily business.

Are you an experienced KT Officer, KTO manager, IP portfolio manager or responsible for the administrative processes of a KTO with at least two years’ experience? Do you wish to become Head of a KTO or responsible for the operation of a KTO? This course is designed for technology transfer professionals in charge the operations or administration of a knowledge transfer office.

    • 09:45 - 10:45    Role of the KTO within the Organisation

      This session will help you understand the current evolution of the KT function. Discuss the role of the KTO within the organisation, the key objectives and the tasks performed. Study the expectations of the stakeholders and the policy/legal context. Reflect on your situation in small groups, explore KT mandate and objectives, the tasks of the KTO, stakeholder expectations and management, and critical success factors.

    • 11:15 - 12:15    The Organisational Models for a KTO

      Understand the different models for organising a KTO and possible funding models. Explore the skills and staff profiles required to effectively run the office and, in groups reflect upon the organisational models of the participants. How does the model support the mandate and objectives of the KTO and how to improve them.

    • 12:15 - 14:00    Lunch

    • 14:00 - 15:00    Panel Discussion: KTO organisation

      Participants are invited to present the result of the group discussions and share it with the panel.

    • 15:30 - 16:15    Beyond your own KTO: building an Ecosystem for Economic Development

      Organising your ecosystem for economic development; determining the players that need to be assembled, their motivations, setting the vision and goals and delivering on them.

      How to make a real difference and enhance the performance and impact of your KTO. How to organise your ecosystem? What works and what does not?

    • 09:30 - 10:15    Marketing your KTO

      A critical component of organising your KTO for growth and success is to convince partners, sponsors and talent to join you on your mission. Good marketing and communications enable you to have greater impact, secure additional funding, attract new partnerships and the top talent you need to fuel further growth and success. We will discuss how to establish your brand with key audiences; how to increase the impact of your work and the recognition your office receives for it.

    • 10:30 - 11:15    KTO Activities Reporting

      This session will be about the current state of national and international activities in Europe. Established KPIs as well as new metrices for demonstrating impact will be discussed.

    • 11:15 - 11:45    Coffee Break

    • 11:45 - 12:30    Managing a Patent Portfolio: decision criteria and tools

      This session examines the criteria for setting priorities, making decisions and will help familiarise you with the tools that facilitate IP management. Includes due diligence, using external databases, managing expectations, the tools and databases available to track the application process, and the tools to help you decide which patents to continue with.

    • 14:00 - 14:45    Managing Research Contracts

      Effectively managing research contracts can be challenging. This session will provide an overview of the procedures and tools to assist KTO managers.

    • 14:45 - 15:30    Managing Licensing Agreements

      Understand the process of following up a license agreement. In this session you shall explore: post-license follow up, managing licensing income, compliance with agreed terms, auditing, and royalty distribution.

    • 15:45 - 16:30    Building Strategic Partnerships

      This session will help you understand the value of strategic partnerships and how to align these with the internal strategy of your institution. You shall explore: public private partnerships and alliances, VIP networks, fundraising, the importance of a strategic agenda, and collaborative road mapping.

    • 16:30 - 17:00    Round up of day 2

      What did we learn today? Time for reflection, hands-on examples, exercises and Q&A.

      From public private partnerships/alliances, strategic account management, lobbying, to the use of alumni networks, VIP networks, fundraising, strategic agendas, to collaborative road mapping; there are many ways to build a strategic partnership.

    • 10:15 - 11:00    Managing Proof of Concept Schemes

      What are proof of concept schemes and how can you manage these effectively? This session will discuss the aims, evaluation processes, and how to engage academics and industry to establish a successful PoC.

    • 11:00 - 11:30    Coffee Break

    • 11:30 - 12:15    Managing Investment Funds

      This session will help you understand the aim of investment funds and how to effectively manage them. Prepare to explore the investment process, how to engage with Venture Capitalists and investment committees.
