By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand financial models and financial ratio’s, valuation aspects, project finances, funding sources and subsidies and grants
  • Interpret and analyse financial data about your type of business and your (internal and external) customers (researchers, startups, alliance partners, subsidy partners, …)
  • Understand what is driving your executive decisions and link these challenges with your decisions
  • Speak the language and terminology of finance and be confident to ask effective questions
  • Understand accounting policies, financial statements, pricing structures, funding structures, capital structures, valuation methods, subsidy & grants structures.

      Meet the team who will be delivering this new course on Financial Tools for KTOs, they will talk you through what will be expected from you and what to expect from the coming days.

    • 09:45 - 10:00    The KTO and its financials

    • 10:00 - 10:15    Break

    • 10:15 - 11:15    Financial models: vocabulary

      In this session, you will become familiar with the basic financial terms. By the end of this session, you will have a better understanding of the various assets any organisation may have and the basic financial models.

    • 11:15 - 11:30    Break

    • 11:30 - 12:30    Financial Statements: reporting

      This session includes the basics of balance sheets, profit and loss, EBIT/EBITDA and cash flow.

    • 12:30 - 12:45    Break

    • 12:45 - 13:45    Project finance

      This session shall further explore project finance tools such as DCF, IRR, NPV, ROI, and break even.

      Case Study

      As part of every module we will work on the integral case study. Create a “balance sheet” and a “Profit and Loss” for your own organisation.

      Each task of a university KTO has its own financial aspects and (legal) implications. This session will set the scene of a KTO, examine the core tasks and roles and unpack their financial implications,

    • 10:15 - 11:15    The Business Plan

      This session explores the ingredients of business plan: financial planning, the business model, the value proposition and the financial risks involved, Explore what it takes to build a business plan.

    • 11:30 - 12:30    Setting up and managing contracts and agreements

      Setting up and managing contracts and agreements can be complex and involved. This session will walk you through the various aspects of this by unpacking: Non-Disclosure Agreements; Collaboration Agreements; License Agreements; Term Sheets; Shareholder Agreements Management Agreements.

      Through the use of case studies, this session will help you explore both auditing licenses and auditing contracts.

      This session will look at the different funds in (very) early stage and explain what is needed, where and why: Proof of Concept Funds, Pre Seed Funds, Seed Funds, Incubator Funds and Facilities, Accelerator Funds and Facilities, Venture Capital, Public Private Partnerships and Funding.

      Number based performance of your KTO. How to get an additional budget/resources for your KTO.
